Diary 32: The magic digital pen recorder

1. Time: November 28, 2003

2. Place: computer lab

3. Research hours: 14

    Wow, the examination was

    finally done.

We all gathered at the computer lab! We were distributed a worksheet for making the dreamland come true on which was the activity timetable. We had some done. We would keep up the work. Last time we had a digital pen with us. With the transmission wire, we could listen to it on the computer, amazing. It¡¦s said the recording pen could both work as a recorder and a portable diskette for saving files. Diary 33: The confirmation of the community map 1. Time: November 29, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Recorder: Mei-Yu On Saturday we combined the community maps drawn by the members and took another round of the community tour to confirm every landmark¡¦s position. We hoped to come up with a complete community map to be used as a tour guiding map. It¡¦s not easy to draw a large community in a small piece of paper. The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community was very busy due to the ongoing constructions. We took some pictures which would be placed in the reconstruction unit. Diary 34: We discussed how to color-paint the community¡¦s wall. 1. Time: December 1, 2003 2. Place: computer lab 3. Research hours: 13 4. Recorder: Jing-Yu We discussed the matters about color painting the community¡¦s wall. We were taught to think in 6 Ws: why, who, what, how, when, where. We grouped before inviting teachers to join the discussion of what to draw. What we hoped was a prettier wall. Diary 35: We discussed how to recruit the juvenile volunteer workers the 2nd time. 1. Time: December 2, 2003 2. Place: the science lab 3. Recorder: Yu-Ren I was asked to play my interview recording for everyone to listen. I was praised for having done a good job. We went to the science lab to discuss the 2nd recruitment of the juvenile volunteer workers for the team. We were very nervous and didn¡¦t know what to say. Then the teachers taught us to greet first, followed by self-introduction, the job of the volunteer workers, and the welcome statement. Hopefully everything would work well. Diary 36: We acted on the 2nd recruitment of the juvenile volunteer workers for the team. 1. Time: December 3, 2003 2. Place: the meeting room 3. Research hours: 25 4. Recorder: De-Gang This morning, we broadcasted to get together the children of the ¡§Nice¡¨ Community for a meeting for the ¡§Nice¡¨ members to introduce themselves before welcoming them to join as juvenile volunteer workers. Today we had many children and the ¡§Nice¡¨ teammates were nervous, so we kind of babbled. Three children, however, were praised for their speaking loudly and clearly. Diary 37: The American English class for children of the Community. 1. Time: December 3, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 8 4. Recorder: Mei-Yu The community opened free children American English classes on every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon. A class for the first thru third graders was from 3 to 4 pm and B class for fourth thru six graders was from 4 to 5 pm. Some of the ¡§Nice¡¨ family members like Yan-Ting, Yu-Ren and Yi-Ting came here to study. We came to the activity center to take pictures of them. The teacher was a foreigner assisted by a mama volunteer worker. The topic of daily American English attracted students as they played football while learning on the open space beside the activity center. Diary 38: We shared what we learned from recruiting the juvenile volunteer workers. 1. Time: December 4, 2003 2. Place: the computer lab 3. Research hours: 14 4. Recorder: I-Jie We were shown the recruited volunteer workers¡¦ data and were asked to say something about what impressed us, what troubled us and what we learned. What impressed me was being interviewed like a celebrity and the trouble was making a plan, which I learned most, though. In addition, I learned the skills for making a poster and trained my gusts. Diary 39: We composed the picture for the wall. 1. Time: December 4, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 12 4. Recorder: Yu-Ren The Director drove the teachers Mr. Jheng and Mr. Jhao and Yan-Ting and me to help compose for the drawing of the wall of the ¡§Nice¡¨ Community. We worked hard and took a lot of pictures. Our picture-taking skills got better and learned how to delete the unusable pictures. The drawing was not done till 4 pm. Diary 40: We had a community hero hunt. 1. Time: December 5, 2003 2. Place: Computer lab 3. Research hours: 14 4. Recorder: Jing-Yu Ya-Wei mentioned the difficulty of recruiting juvenile volunteer workers, the same problem faced by the Community. So those who can give to the Community deserve our learning. We took Saturdays and Sundays to search the community heroes. Thru interviews of the family and residents, we got the recommended listing. Diary 41: We listened to the tales told by the elders. 1. Time: December 6, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 12 4. Recorder: Ya-Wei The ¡§Nice¡¨ family came to interview grandpa and great uncle to talk about things of the past. I rode my bike to lead the teacher who happened to take pictures of care-giving unit of the Community. Later the teacher came with books about Taiwan for the interviewees to recall. The interview ended by 4 pm. It¡¦s incredible to learn that residents of the Community had to swim on rainy days to go out. Diary 42: We put in order the data of the tales told by the elders. 1. Time: November 16, 2003 2. Place: at home 3. Research hours: 12 4. Recorder: Mei-Yu We worked overtime on Sundays to organize the records of the old tales, a hard job to do mainly due to the Taiwanese language the two elders spoke and lots of special agricultural terminology in the tales. Fortunately we borrowed many reference books to consult with. Diary 43: We shared what we learned from the community hero hunt. 1. Time: December 8, 2003 2. Place: Computer lab 3. Research hours: 12 4. Recorder: Pei-Jhen We were asked to report the community heroes we found. Although we found different heroes, they did good things to the Community. After this interview, we were happy, because we found many people cared so much for this community and were willing to give. Diary 44: We were on the press! 1. Time: December 9, 2003 2. Place: Computer lab 3. Research hours: 12 4. Recorder: I-Jei We each got a copy of a report on the greenery activities held on Sundays in the Community, in which our ¡§Nice¡¨ family took part in taking pictures. So we were also interviewed by the reporters. Great. We were going to color paint the wall tomorrow, a major event, so we discussed the things to be aware of; hopefully we took this seriously tomorrow. Diary 45: We color-painted the Community¡¦s wall. 1. Time: December 12, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 180 4. Recorder: Mei-Yu We first got those children to color paint the wall together before we formed groups for children to choose from. By 1 pm the children were taken to the ¡§Nice¡¨ Community only to find that the children of the ¡§Nice¡¨Community had long waited beside the wall. Then we mixed colors, wore light raincoats, took brushes and cement paint and started our painting. This was the first time for many children so they were very excited. About 50 children came along with six guiding teachers. Three community patrolmen and two mama volunteers also came to help with the traffic control. The community¡¦s General Director kept company with us. The principal and many six graders visited us, too. There were also the reporters of the Liberty Times. We were efficient to get the wall painted around 3 pm. Next, it took us some time to clean the place and the tools we used and everyone was busy till 4 pm. In the end, we were treated some snacks bought by the Honorable Director of the Community, for which we felt thankful. Diary 46: We had the little reporters¡¦ trial. 1. Time: December 12, 2003 2. Place: Computer lab 3. Research hours: 14 4. Recorder: Jing-Yu The nervous moment finally came. We had to be independent. We were given a sheet titled ¡§the secret to success¡¨ and taught what to be aware of pre, during, and after the interview. Then we moved into our groups, chose the interviewees, and planned the questionnaire. We would interview on Saturdays and Sundays when everyone was available for us. Diary 47: We shared the attainments of color-painting the wall. 1. Time: December 11, 2003 2. Place: Computer lab 3. Research hours: 12 4. Recorder: Yi-Ting Yesterday was the big day for color painting the wall of the community. Due to everyone¡¦s efforts, the job was done in an afternoon. So we used today¡¦s noon break to share our thoughts and review our work. Following are our thoughts: The most impressive:We were asked to put on the raincoats to avoid getting soiled. In the beginning everyone was happy and fun. But in the middle when we were tired and hot, we took the raincoats off to cool down and didn¡¦t care much about our clothes. The most difficult:It¡¦s hard to paint in the slits, a challenge to our limit. Next is mixing colors because we don¡¦t know how. We had to ask teachers. We learned:How to mix colors and draw on the wall. More importantly we had to work together to get the job done. Improvement:Many lacked patience and tried to take a break and have fun in the halfway. Diary 48: We had the exciting interview. 1. Time: December 11, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 27 4. Recorder: I-Jei Intelligent Team's report Team leader: I-jei Members: Jing-Yu, Ya-Wei, Kai-Lun Report by the team leader: I-Jei I called my teammates trying to get them together at my place; however, they were not there. Fortunately, Directory Tsai would help so I could go to the cram school later. We started our interviews by 1 pm when everyone was here. Because the General Director was a good help, the interview went smoothly. Grandpa Jia-Sing Syu was hard of hearing so we had to speak very loudly. But it¡¦s easier for us to interview grandpa Jia-Jhong Syu and uncle Syu-Ming Syu. The first time when Kai-Lun took pictures, he was clumsy, so many pictures could not be used. But the teacher told us to save them until they were filed into the computers for editing. Great! We could get three interviews done today and passed the trial. And thank those who helped us to get the job done and all the interviewees. Diary 49: Let¡¦s turn to the interviews of the Community¡¦s heroes. 1. Time: December 14, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 14 4. Recorder: Pei-Jhen It¡¦s our team¡¦s turn to undergo the trial interview and our interviewees were the General Director, Mr. Jin-Sing Syu, Mama volunteer worker, Ms. Mei-Yun Liang and Ms. Mei-Ru Chen. The team leader, Yu-Ting, took lead in raising questions with her brother to help with picture-taking. De-Gang was responsible for recording while I took notes. Teamwork helped us to have a smooth interview. We were a bit nervous. However, the interviewees were kind and we felt very easy so we talked a lot. We got the interview done by 10 am, amazing! Diary 50: We shared what we felt about the interviews of the Community¡¦s heroes. 1. Time: December 15, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 28 4. Recorder: Yu-Ting When the principal rewarded the participants for the wall color- painting, we got a bad news from Director Tsai that the pictures we took on Saturday and Sunday for the interviews were deleted. However, we were led to think what to do first? When we were at the meeting at noon, three team leaders, I-Jie, Wei-Han and I first reported the interview process. Later, we found which team got the camera and deleted all the pictures. Yan-Ting said he did not do it on purpose. Only a picture he meant to delete; however, he deleted all unexpectedly. We forgave him because he sincerely apologized. Next we discussed how to solve the problem. We came up with the solution to retake the pictures; however there were two ways and we could not decide which way. We would vote tomorrow. Diary 51: We shared our Community¡¦s map. 1. Time: December 16, 2003 2. Place: Computer lab 3. Research hours: 14 4. Recorder: De-Gang We took the noon break to display the community map we drew. It¡¦s interesting to look for the familiar ¡§Nice¡¨ Community in the joint map of members. Each had a different style. We were encouraged to make the map better by adding a second job. On the other hand, we decided to retake the pictures when we took the records for the interviewees to confirm. This would make our research more readable. Diary 52: We did the ¡§thank-you¡¨ cards (part 1) 1. Time: December 18, 2003 2. Place: Computer lab 3. Research hours: 14 4. Recorder: Jing-Yu With our efforts, we got the community hero interviews done. To thank the hero interviewees and the advice of the principal, Director, and teachers, we decided to do thank-you cards. So at the noon break, the teachers taught us to do our thank-you cards by using the computer drawing software. But it was too late to print the cards which we saved for tomorrow. Diary 53: The wall color-painting touch-up and the interviews. 1. Time: December 17, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 77 4. Recorder: Yan-Ting We got into two teams, one following Director Shih and the teachers and one following Director Tsai to retake some agricultural appliances. We returned to the wall by 4 pm, which looked prettier after the teachers¡¦touch-up. The teachers took the job seriously and did not return home when it was time. All they wanted was a prettier wall. We helped to pick up the tools and returned home by 5 pm. Diary 54: We completed organizing the data of the Community¡¦s heroes. 1. Time: December 19, 2003 2. Place: at home 3. Research hours: 15 4. Recorder: Mei-Yu From Monday thru today, after 5 nights¡¦ job on putting the data in order, we came up with the records for the community hero unit. From the interview recording, we found kids could be so talented to learn many skills. The most important thing was they could review and reflect when sharing their experiences. I smiled when I listened to the recording which helped me form the pictures in my mind. It¡¦s a worthwhile effort for me. Diary 55: We did the ¡§thank-you¡¨cards (part 2). 1. Time: December 19, 2003 2. Place: computer lab 3. Research hours: 18 4. Recorder: Cen-Rong We continued our work left yesterday by printing the thank-you cards. Then we wrote our deepest thanks. There were over 20 cards for those we wanted to thank. It took us some time to write up and seal the envelopes. We would deliver our cards tomorrow afternoon. Diary 56: We delivered the ¡§thank-you¡¨cards and the interview feedback sheets. 1. Time: December 20, 2003 2. Place: The ¡§Nice¡¨ Community 3. Research hours: 20 4. Recorder: Yu-Ting We scheduled to deliver the cards at 2 pm today. I brought these thank-you cards home to stick stickers. And today the teachers brought the straightened records, together with interview feedback letters for interviewees to write their thoughts and sign on and agree to our use of these records and pictures. Of course we took the camera to retake the pictures we deleted. And we thanked all the interviewees with the loudest applause. It¡¦s so cold today due to the cold front. Some were sick and some late, while the teachers were punctual. She was here by 1:50 pm. This we should learn. Diary 57: We organized the data of the tales of the past. 1. Time: December 21, 2003 2. Place: at home 3. Research hours: 16 4. Recorder: Mei-Yu We straightened the oral history told by the elders of the Community. To make the unit more interesting, we wanted to put some old pictures. However, few had cameras in the old days so little pictures were preserved. We consulted some books and found the pictures taken by a famous photographer, Mr. Syu, which showed the actual life of the residents of the old days. After our contact, Mr. Syu was generous giving us many pictures and agreed to our use of these pictures. Thanks to Mr. Syu, this unit could work to our expectation. Diary 58: We compiled our personal data. 1. Time: December 22, 2003 2. Place: computer lab 3. Research hours: 14 4. Recorder: Cen-Rong Today we discussed at the computer lab what personal data should be included in the research team unit. Diary 59: The reconstruction work was huge. 1. Time: December 23, 2003 2. Place: computer lab 3. Research hours: 15 4. Recorder: Kai-Lun We were taught the skills to put the files in order, which was using folders to file each category. We took some pictures of us together before we were asked to say something about our research. The lesson of this research was: work seriously; the most amazing: we found many antiques in the Community. Diary 60: We did the web pages. 1. Time: December 24, 2003 2. Place: at home 3. Research hours: 56 4. Recorder: Jian-Ming Only when we started doing the web pages did we realize the tremendous amount of the data. So it would take more time than we expected to get the job done. The trouble was the agricultural artifacts for I¡¦ve never seen some of the basic agricultural tools. It took me a lot of time to check the pictures. Fortunately, I could ask teachers for advice. No writings! I¡¦m going to work now! Diary 61: We all looked for typos 1. Time: December 25, 2003 2. Place: computer lab 3. Research hours: 22 4. Recorder: De-Gang Today we started checking typos. The sixth graders got some help of their classmates. However, we could not do this on line for the connection was down. So we did this by teamwork. What a laborious eye job to check the typos because we had to keep staring at the screen. But we had to be patient for our work. Diary 62: We were typo-seeking experts! 1. Time: December 26, 2003 2. Place: computer lab 3. Research hours: 22 4. Recorder: Yan-Ting We continued looking for typos this noon break. We sped up with the help of last experience. We would be so happy as to yell when we found a typo. We also shared our thoughts for the past two months¡¦ work to be put in the research team unit. Diary 63: We got the interview feedback back. 1. Time: December 27, 2003 2. Place: computer lab 3. Research hours: 22 4. Recorder: Mei-Yu Thank you for the interviewees who gave us positive feedback. The General Director Syu praised us for our work to bridge the gap of the Community, a great contribution. Some elderly interviewees were illiterate so we didn¡¦t get feedback from them. However, they encouraged us orally. We scanned the feedback sheets into the computers to be put into the research team unit. Thanks again for their feedback. Diary 64: We got the ¡§Nice¡¨web pages done. 1. Time: December 27, 2003 2. Place: at home 3. Research hours: 44 4. Recorder: Mei-Yu After the long struggle, we got our ¡§Nice¡¨ web pages done today. Thanks to Jian-Ming¡¦s untiring efforts, we could see the persistence in our work on our web pages. He sat in front of the computer by 8 am every morning and was there until 4 pm even without having lunch. He used the flash hard drive to do his work after he went home. Often we heard him say, ¡§Let me play with it another night.¡¨ Thanks for Da-Ren¡¦s support by playing the role as an emergency doctor to help us to get ¡§the test of the past¡¨ done. I believe that our web pages look more appealing. It¡¦s a painstaking job to do the web pages without external support. But we made it. Diary 65: We got the ¡§Nice¡¨web pages uploaded. 1. Time: December 28, 2003 2. Place: at home 3. Research hours: 20 4. Recorder: Mei-Yu Yeh! We got the web pages uploaded successfully through Jian-Ming¡¥s continuous untiring efforts. Next is the most important--Surf on internet to check if there are any problems. In addition to the three teachers, the teammates who could do the job at home took the last chance to proofread quickly. ¡§Good and better!¡¨ Keep up the work! Diary 66: Let¡¦s be ambassadors. 1. Time: December 29, 2003 2. Place: Computer lab 3. Research hours: 15 4. Recorder: I-Jei With the web pages done, we turned ambassadors introducing our web site. For those who had computers at home, they did the job at home. For those who didn¡¦t, they could use noon breaks to log on to introduce our web site. We decided each member should introduce ourselves to three other teams on the internet everyday. However, we could also take this opportunity to check others¡¦ work. It¡¦s a lot easier to be ambassadors on internet than introduce it on stage. Welcome your visit to the ¡§Nice¡¨ Community. Diary 67: We were the guardian angels of the Community.

It¡¦s the last day of the research today. We thought we could not come to the computer lab thereafter; fortunately, we could and we could come everyday as we would. Good. We each were given an angel badge hopefully to be the guardian angels of the Community for good. We would not forget the Community after the research was done because we were all juvenile volunteer workers. We want to care for our Community and make it nicer! Diary 68: Yeh! We won a prize! 1. Date¡GJune 2, 2004 2. Place: Meeting room 3. Recorder: Yu-Ting A good new! We won a prize! The teachers told us we won the first prize presented by Changhwa County. The principal went with Director Tsai and I-Jie to Yung Ching Elementary School to receive the award. Before long we learned that we won again, the second prize of the national contest plus a reward of NT$8,000. The award presentation ceremony was in Kaohsiung, a grand ceremony with many shows and performances. We were nervous yet exciting when we were presented the award! We discussed how to use the NT$8,000 in a meeting. To feedback to the Community, we used NT$4,000 to buy some books for the children of the Community to read. For the remainder NT$4,000, we bought presents for every member of the team and those who assisted in the research. The Director was asked to buy books and I, some presents. I didn¡¦t know what to buy in the beginning. With Mom¡¦s help, we went to the bookstore to buy some stationery for team members to use at school. We also bought some delicious dried marinated meat for the townsfolk of the Community. We were awarded some money from the school and the ¡§Nice¡¨ Community, too. We felt so good that we won the prizes and our efforts were reaffirmed. Diary 69: What followed after the research was done.

    Although the CyberFair

research reached a conclusion, we each continued our participation in the Community¡¦s activities like the summer talents camp, the completion of the Banyan Park, and the music and drum festival for the Moon Festival. On the other hand, the Community¡¦s ¡§The Nice¡¦s treasure hunt revitalizing project¡XThe investigation of the image of the traditional farm life and culture¡¨ which was awarded a grant by the Council for Cultural Affairs was done together with our school and Lu Ming Junior High School. With the efforts of the residents, the Nice Community was awarded the first grand prize of Changhwa County, which we all felt honored to take part in. We need to operate the community continually to witness its success, so shall we continue to support the community. Diary 70: We participated in the International CyberFair Contest.
